CONTEXT
On the 25th of April 2015, a massive 7.8 magnitude earthquake hit Nepal near the capital city of Kathmandu making over 8,000 casualties, 23,000 injured and destroying more than 800,000 houses. In less than a minute, the whole country was thrown into chaos. On May 12th 2015, another tremor, 7.4 magnitude, struck causing thousands of more buildings to collapse whilst more people were killed and injured. The total number of people affected by both earthquakes, aftershocks and subsequent flooding in September 2015 was estimated to be approximately 2.8 million.
Today, more than a million children don't have access to schools due to the collapse of over 30,000 school classrooms. The nation is now confronted to a huge challenge. Rebuild a country. Give a future to the children who will make Nepal's tomorrow.

ACTION
Soon after the first earthquake, Yurena and Charles were called to be part of the ALL HANDS VOLUNTEERS' rapid response team to help nepali people. Their mission was to manage volunteers' teams, clear streets full of rubble, distribute emergency supplies and build emergency shelters and child friendly spaces. After a month spent in the urgency of such a natural disaster, they decided to create their own structure: YUCHA.

After a month spent in the urgency of such a natural disaster, they decided to create their own structure: YUCHA.

YUCHA is now working on a recovery project for the children of Kadambas, a village in the highly affected district of Sindhupalchok.
Today, YUCHA gives you the opportunity to help them to rebuild their future.
By building a 7 classroom earthbag school, we will allow 210 children to attend school in a safe environment. The construction will take place in March and April 2016. And we are actively searching for donors!

AN EARTHBAG SCHOOL FOR A LONG TERM SUSTAINABLE PROJECT, EARTHQUAKE-RESISTANT
The principle of the earthbag construction technique is to build walls with polypropylene bags filed with earth, set in rows, tamped and reinforced with barbed wire and vertical rebars. The roof is made of tin sheets fixed on a wooden structure and the walls are protected with cement plaster. This technique is eco-friendly, affordable and eartquake-resistant.

OPERATIONAL PARTNERSHIP

For the construction of the Kadambas school, YUCHA will work in partnership with FIRST STEPS HIMALAYA (FSH). Since 2009, this organisation works with disavantaged communities in rural Himalaya and contributes to early childhood development providing quality education in schools of 22 communities of Sindhupalchok's district. FSH has already built a 2 room Educational Center in Sangachok, Nepal, using the earthbag technique. It was completed 6 days prior to the earthquakes and it stood up the 2 major tremors and more than 500 aftershocks with only a few superficial cracks in the plaster!
